Associate Building Maintenance Specialist

Job Summary

Spokane Transit is in the middle of a dynamic 10-year plan called STA Moving Forward. The purpose of this plan is to maintain, improve, and expand transit services throughout Spokane County to meet the needs of our growing community. We are currently searching for a skilled Associate Building Maintenance Specialist with a wide range of experience to join our Facilities and Grounds maintenance team.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ASSOCIATE BUILDING MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST

As an Associate Building Maintenance Specialist, you will perform semi-skilled maintenance and minor repair activities on Spokane Transit’s buildings, grounds, equipment, furnishings, and other transit facilities. You may also work on small gasoline engines, hoists, vehicle washers, overhead doors, compressors, steam cleaners, environmental controls, plumbing fixtures, carpentry, and masonry. As you apply your wide range of knowledge and skills in repair and general facilities maintenance, you will assure that your team is able to successfully carry out STA’s preventative maintenance program.

Ideal Candidate Profile

YOU HAVE

  • Two years of work experience involving the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, equipment, and furnishings.
  • A valid driver’s license from Washington or Idaho with a relatively clean record
  • The ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (We do the training & testing!)
  • Ability to pass a Second-Class Facilities and Grounds examination.

YOU MIGHT HAVE 

  • Heating, Mechanic, Boiler/Pressure Vessel, Electrical Specialty, Plumbing, Welding, HVAC, Pesticide/Herbicide, Elevator, Masonry, Contractor, Carpentry, Telecommunications, or Locksmith experience OR City of Spokane Heating Mechanic license.

Examples of Duties

  • Perform diagnostic, minor repair and installation work on STA’s new and existing buildings, equipment and grounds.
  • Maintain and repair, or assist in the repair of mechanical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and sewer systems, repair shop tools and equipment including non-electrical appliance and steam equipment.
  • Service and lubricate grinders, pumps, valves, bearings, gearboxes, generators, compressors and other mechanical equipment as needed.
  • Perform painting, plastering, tiling and carpet laying work.
  • Perform building and grounds maintenance duties including the cleaning and upkeep of grounds, facility parking lot, park and ride lots, bus stops, and shelters.
  • Clean and repair bus shelters and bus stops, park and ride lots, and facility parking lots.
  • Perform grounds work, including lawn mowing, edging, weeding, trimming and fertilizing at all Spokane Transit facilities.
  • Drive service vehicles, including trucks, repair vans, forklifts, man lifts, and snowplows.
  • Assist other Facilities and Grounds staff in fulfilling duties necessary to provide the efficient and safe function of all equipment and buildings belonging to Spokane Transit.

Education and Experience

Training and Experience

Two years of work experience involving the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, equipment and furnishings.  Related course work or training may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.

License

Must possess a valid driver’s license from the state of residence and the ability to obtain the required Commercial Driver’s License, within a specified time, as determined by Spokane Transit.

Testing

Must be able to pass a Second-Class Facilities and Grounds examination.

Physical Requirements

The physical activity of position requires the ability to stoop, sit, squat, waist bend, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, grasp, crawl, twist, balance, talk and finger.  The sensory requirements of position include visual acuity to determine color, depth and field of vision, and the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discriminations in sound. The physical requirements of position require the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and /or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Incumbent is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, physical hazards, atmosphere conditions, vibration, and hazardous materials.
