Training Instructor

Job Summary

The Training Instructor is responsible for updating and delivery of Spokane Transit’s skills training and education/development programs. Work includes ensuring curricula and course content meet current requirements, assessment and evaluation of student learning, and maintenance of related training records and reporting. Training has an emphasis on new hire training programs for Fixed Route Operators, Paratransit Operators, Cleaners, Servicers, forklift operators and shop personnel specific to CDL Class A and B training. Responsibilities also include training for volunteer drivers, safety training, and other organizational related training such as, but not limited to, defensive driving course, back injury prevention, and first aid/CPR. Work requires maintaining a current Class A or B CDL driver’s license with a passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Work is performed in a classroom and in the field, involving exposure to weather and physical demands involved in demonstrating techniques and methods.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Experience operating class A & B commercial motor vehicles.

Experienced in instructional design.

Possesses Passenger endorsement and no Air-brake restriction

Current Washington and/or Idaho 3rd party tester a plus.

Examples of Duties

This role necessitates the trainer to consistently exhibit professionalism in all interactions and activities. The trainer is expected to uphold high standards of conduct and demeanor and instill the same expectations in the trainees. Must maintain a respectful and inclusive training environment, demonstrate ethical behavior, and promote a culture of learning and excellence in the classroom and in the field.

  • Lead by example. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and fairness in all actions.
  • Do not engage in unprofessional speech or behavior with coworkers, trainers, or trainees. If any trainee exhibits unprofessional talk or behavior, it is the trainer’s responsibility to address this immediately.

Assume the role of a subject matter expert in Fixed Route and Paratransit training content. This involves developing a deep understanding of the content, staying updated with the latest trends and advancements, and leveraging this expertise to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the training program.

Education and Experience

Three years work experience as a transit operator, or applicable experience in a related field, which demonstrates the
ability to instruct others. Additional instructional or leadership experience preferred.

Three years as a licensed CDL A or B operator.

Able to obtain a Passenger and Air-brakes endorsement within 6 months of hire.
