Spokane Transit is moving forward with major improvements along West Broadway, bringing high-frequency transit to the corridor.
In 2021, the STA Board of Directors advanced a program of investments that would improve mobility while preparing for a future strategic plan. Included as part of that program were capital improvements along Route 21 West Broadway that matched other High Performance Transit (HPT) corridors. While Route 21 will not fully adopt the attributes of an HPT route, planning is underway to deliver enhancements to bus stop accessibility and service reliability.
“These improvements will help balance transit access and reliability,” said Drew Redman, STA Associate Transit Planner. “Fewer stops improve speed and reliability along the route, while well-placed amenities ensure riders have a comfortable waiting experience.”
Redman recently presented the planned upgrades to the West Central Neighborhood Council, detailing the project’s current proposed changes, which have evolved from previously gathered community feedback.
Phase 1 will cover STA-funded capital improvements for Route 21, including real-time sign displays, shelters, lighting, and trash receptacles at the West Central Community Center stop. Several closely spaced stops will be consolidated, including those at A Street & Dean Avenue and A Street & Broadway Avenue, with a new shelter at Mallon Avenue, which will also support nearby social services through Union Gospel Mission and Catholic Charities. Stop relocations are also planned at Mission Avenue & Nettleton Street.
With design and permitting underway, upcoming efforts include outreach to adjacent property owners. Construction timelines will be announced as approvals progress.
