At the December 2014 Board Meeting, the STA Board of Directors agreed to make revisions to the Plaza Redesign project based on input from local business groups. The Plaza will be reconfigured to improve function for transit customers, downtown employees, visitors and the surrounding community. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2015 and the entire project is estimated to take 18 months to complete.
At the July 2014 Board Meeting, the STA Board of Directors extended the time for public input on the Plaza Redesign project. The downtown STA Plaza will be reconfigured to improve The Plaza’s function for transit customers, downtown employees, visitors and the surrounding community and to support a vibrant downtown. Plans are for the first floor to house retail space, STA customer service and public restrooms, and the second floor to accommodate versatile meeting rooms, exhibit space and STA Operations.
The project will implement the interior space program approved by the STA Board on September, 19, 2013 after a detailed evaluation of options and a decision to invest in capital improvements. A prior study completed in 2008 concluded that retaining and improving the Plaza was the most effective way to serve downtown Spokane into the future. This decision is reflected in Connect Spokane, STA’s Comprehensive Plan, which establishes the policy to improve The Plaza’s infrastructure to enhance operational processes.
